Dianne was preparing to move back to her family’s home in Bangkok, and her cats, Hammond and Tommy, were central to every part of the plan. She loved them deeply and stayed engaged throughout the significant preparation required by the Thai government. We guided her step by step so the cats’ documentation and travel arrangements would be ready when it was time to go.
On travel day, we flew to Rochester, New York, where Dianne’s wonderful parents met us at the airport with Hammond and Tommy. From there, we flew together to JFK and settled into a pet-friendly hotel for the night before the long international flight.

A Diversion We Couldn’t Risk
During the night, we learned that weather had forced a major change to our original itinerary. The planned layover in South Korea was being diverted to Japan. That created a serious problem: Japan generally does not permit pets to travel in the passenger cabin under the circumstances we faced.
Continuing could have risked quarantine or even forced Hammond and Tommy to return to the United States. We made the call not to gamble with their entry. Instead, we booked a new itinerary on Turkish Airlines with a layover in much more pet-friendly Istanbul.
The Safer Route—and an Earlier Arrival
The new plan worked beautifully. Hammond and Tommy remained with us in the cabin, traveled through Istanbul without the entry complications Japan would have created, and continued safely to Thailand.
In one of those wonderfully strange travel twists, the reroute actually brought us into Bangkok earlier than the original itinerary would have. Dianne was waiting to welcome her boys home, turning what could have become a serious international problem into a very happy reunion.
