Maryland to California Cat Relocation | Butter & Ziva
When Butter and Ziva’s family began preparing for a cross-country move from Maryland to California, one of their biggest concerns was making sure their beloved cats arrived safely and comfortably at their new home.
Like many pet parents facing a major relocation, they wanted a personalized alternative to traditional pet shipping. Their biggest worry was Butter, the curious orange cat they feared might struggle with the journey.
As it turned out, Butter and Ziva couldn’t have been better travel companions.

The Journey from Maryland to California
Our day began early with a 3:15 a.m. pickup at the family’s home in Maryland.
It was immediately obvious how much Butter and Ziva were loved. Their family had everything prepared and organized before we arrived, helping make the start of the journey smooth and stress-free for everyone involved.
The family’s relocation meant Mom and the children were already settling into their new home in Millbrae while Dad remained in Maryland. Butter and Ziva’s trip would be one of the final pieces bringing the family back together.
Despite concerns that Butter might find the trip stressful, he quickly proved otherwise. Curious about everything around him, he approached the day with confidence and interest at every stage of the journey.
Ziva took a different approach. Calm, relaxed, and content from start to finish, she handled the entire trip like a seasoned traveler.
Through the Airport
One of the most stressful moments of any pet travel day is often airport security.
Not for Butter and Ziva.
Both cats handled the security screening process beautifully. Their calm demeanor even earned admiration from TSA staff along the way.
From check-in through boarding, they remained comfortable and relaxed. During the flight itself, neither cat made a peep.
Their quiet confidence made the cross-country journey remarkably smooth and allowed them to travel comfortably alongside their Cabin Companions escort from Maryland to California.
Ziva quietly watched the activity around her at San Francisco International Airport after a smooth cross-country flight from Maryland, remaining calm and relaxed throughout the journey.
After a day of travel, Butter’s curiosity and Ziva’s confidence were on full display as they immediately began exploring their new home in California.
The Arrival & Happy Ending
After landing in San Francisco, we continued on to Millbrae for the final handoff.
The moment we arrived, it became clear that Butter and Ziva were ready for their next adventure.
As soon as their carriers were opened, both cats stepped out and immediately began exploring their new surroundings. There was no hiding, no hesitation, and no fear—just curiosity and confidence as they investigated their new California home.
Most importantly, they were reunited with the family that had been eagerly waiting for them.
Moving across the country can be stressful for both people and pets, but Butter and Ziva showed just how smoothly a relocation can go with the right preparation and support.
Their family later shared a wonderful review of their experience, expressing how relieved they were to see both cats arrive safely—and how proud they were of Butter, who exceeded everyone’s expectations.
For us, that’s what these journeys are all about: helping families stay together and ensuring pets arrive safely, comfortably, and ready to start their next chapter.
